5th & 6th Grade Divisions

(updated: 11/16/2005)

Description

The 5th and 6th grade girls and boys participate in separate divisions.  These divisions feature real games, referees, and scorekeeping.  The basic  fundamental basketball skills will continue to be taught including shooting, passing, dribbling, ball handle, etc.  More advanced skills will introduced such as rebounding and boxing out, foul shooting, and pivoting.  Game situations such as  in-bounding the ball, jump balls, zone defenses, trapping, etc. will also be introduced.  Rules of the game will also be stressed as they become even more important now that the games are "real".

Games consist of four quarters of 8 minutes duration each.  The game clock runs continuously except for timeouts.  During the last minute of each quarter, the clock will be stopped when the whistle is blown.  Foul shots will be awarded when the limit for the quarter is reached.

League rules require each player to play one entire quarter in the first half and one entire quarter in the second half.  Substitutions are not allowed during the quarter unless a player is injured.  Coaches are encouraged to provide constructive instruction to the players watching from the bench as well as to those playing on the floor.  As with all divisions, teamwork and sportsmanship will be stressed.
